Edgecity Apprentices are signed up to the NZ Certified Builders Apprentice Network at the Auckland launch. Courtney reunites with some former Unitec Tutors, Zak & Courtney meet Malcolm Fleming the CE for NZCB, Nick Matthews Industry Pathways & Apprenticeship Manager at NZCB. They also hear from Nick in his Board Chair capacity with NZCB and meet fellow Apprentices and their employers. Zak and Courtney join many others Apprentices employed by NZ Certified Builders supported in their journey to becoming trade qualified.

Q3 Review - Education, Awards & Birthdays!

Professional development for all our crew is something we do invest in at Edgecity. Each quarter we meet off the tools to review our projects, add some learnings and celebrate our wins. Q3 2023 saw business partners Hillside ITM and GIB present to the crew along with Courtney recapping the learnings from a recent ConCove education seminar she and Sharon had attended. Courtney took out the Q3 Crew Award and shared the birthday month with Clément. Roast lamb and cake digested after all the learnings.

FIFA - Football World Cup

Edgecity supports Multi Ball and were lucky to be involved in the set up of one of their interactive multi ball walls for the Football World Cup in the Fan Zone in Shed 6, Wellington. With Sharon being a retired footballer this was of immense excitement which saw her don the high vis and help with the construction set up and pack down along with fellow NZ Certified Builders member Willy Williamson from Wellington. the NZCB Board meeting concluded just in time to view the days efforts and the Police guard was a fitting frame. The fan zone on game night was full and many queued to get their chance in front of the wall. An added bonus was getting to watch a game live in the old “cake tin”.

2023 NZ Certified Builders - Apprentice Challenge

This year saw Hillside ITM host the Apprentice Challenge. With the largest amount of entrants and their support networks, we experienced another great show of the talent undergoing industry training. Des and his team at Hillside ITM were great hosts and even allowed us to return to assist with the completion of some of the forts so that they could be sold for charity. The completion night saw apprentices and their employers donning the tool belts and mucking in together. Chisel was Head of Security and all things Health & Safety. Edgecity’s very own Clément, was the Site Lead on the finishing line assigning a stream lined approach to the finishing work needed. Thanks Des and all your team at Hillside ITM for such great hospitality and support for our up and coming professional trades folk.

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

It may be my hobby and a mode of transport for our business in heavy Auckland traffic… On Sunday the 21st of May 2023, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember.

So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.

If you would like to follow me or donate to the cause use this link. Small or large, all is welcome.

ITM HILLSIDE & MATAKANA - Hook Me Up Fishing Competition

Edgecity were back again this year for our second attempt to land the big one and help ITM Hillside bring the legendary trophy home to the North Shore.

Last years event was hampered by the weather, this year both the weather and the water provided the perfect back drop for a great days fishing. Before sunrise the crew headed off from Leigh towards Little Barrier.

Matt Watson and the ITM Hosts make sure the event runs like a well oiled machine. A days fishing followed by a fantastic meal and prize-giving is certainly enjoyed by the Edgecity crew. An event we etch permanently on the annual calendar to take time off the tools together to enjoy a common hobby and tell fishing stories with like minded builders from within both regions we see from year to year.

Kev won 2nd prize in the schnapper category for his catch. Clement’s fish coming in just short of Kev’s catch. Check out the fish in the photos below.

Sharon received her request for fresh gurnard thanks to Muzz.

Winner of “best fish dish” was a clear winner to Nick with his raw fish dish Fijian style. Best “variety of fish dishes” going to Clement for his fish curry, seafood chowder and fried fish.

The crew fished in two boats wearing their matching Legasea UV Tees and back to front “ITM Hook Me Up” t-shirts.

We will be back for our “third time lucky” attempt in 2024 to land the big one and secure the trophy down at Diana Drive.

Thanks ITM Hillside, Matakana.

Nick meets Murray Thom - Guest Speaker at North Harbour Club BEN Breakfast

It was great to meet Murray again recently at our North Harbour Club BEN Breakfast. We first met Murray when he spoke at one of our NZ Certified Builders conferences many years ago. This time we took the opportunity to have Murray sign our much treasured copy of his The Great New Zealand Songbook. Murray’s story is inspirational to us as business owners. BEN Breakfast at 7:00am held at Regatta in Takapuna s a great motivational way to start our day.

Nick on TVNZ Breakfast to chat about the impact of the Auckland flooding event on Builders current schedules

Edgecity Builders were approached by TVNZ Breakfast who wished to do an interview on the impact of the recent weather events in Auckland (27th January) to current build schedules. The interview included discussions on the impact to current workload schedules, Council & Insurance damage assessments and previously challenged supply chains.

The brief was to arrive by 6:10am which we did, a brief stop by the make-up room and then into the studio for a 6:40am live interview.

Take a look at what Nick had to say. Nick’s interview follows Ian McCormick | General Manager Building Consents, Auckland Council

HOW TO: Auckland Region's January 2023 "Weather Event" key tips to assist those affected by the flooding

The Auckland Council have shared some information to help:

The following is an overview of our rapid building assessment operation for your information:

  • A red placard means re-entry is prohibited because the building is no longer safe or significantly compromised.

  • A yellow placard mean assessors have concerns about the building’s performance and have restricted entry to part of the building or allow temporary use of the building. Further details of areas restricted will be written on the placard.

  • White placards means the property may have minor damage but is sufficiently safe and inhabitable.

Where Red and Yellow Placards have been issued, it is advised to:

  • Evacuate immediately if instructed on the placard

  • Contact your insurance company

  • You should engage an expert to review the damage in more detail. This may be structural or geotechnical engineer, electrician, plumber etc.

  • Contact Ph 0800 22 22 00 if you would have further information or reports or would like your building reassessed.

Cleaning up after a flood

It is important to clean and dry your house and everything in it. Floodwater may contain sewage and other hazardous materials which can contaminate your whare/home.

•           If your gas meter has been affected by water or debris, contact your gas supplier.

•           Always work safely when cleaning up after a flood:

    • Protect yourself by wearing a properly fitted P2- or N95-rated mask, goggles, gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and gumboots or work shoes.

    • Cover any open cuts, scratches, grazes and wounds with waterproof plasters or dressings.

    • Always wash your hands thoroughly after each clean-up session and before handling food.

•           Wet furniture and surfaces get mouldy after a couple of days, making the air in your whare/home unhealthy. Mould may make some people with asthma, allergies, or other breathing problems sick.

•           Talk to your doctor or another medical professional if you have questions about cleaning or working in a whare/home that has been flooded. If there is a large amount of mould, you may want to hire professional help to clean up the mould.

•           Keep children and animals away from previously flooded areas until they have been cleaned and made safe.

•           Take photos and videos of the damage and anything that needs to be thrown away before starting the clean-up, for insurance purposes.

Cleaning up inside

•           Clean up, drain, and dry inside as quickly as possible. Take out everything that is wet and that can be moved – floor coverings, furniture, bedding, clothing, etc., and put them outside to dry when the weather is fine.

•           Check for trapped water and mud in wall cavities, as well as under shower trays, baths, benches and bottom shelves.

•           Open all doors and windows, and use heaters (e.g., hot air blowers for under-floor space). Do not use outdoor gas appliances, such as patio heaters, indoors.

•           Do not light fires in brick fireplaces for at least two weeks, and then use only small fires until the firebricks have dried out.

•           Consult an engineer if there are signs that the house has moved on its foundations. Signs can include buckled floors, new cracks in walls, or out-of-shape door frames.

•           Remove skirting, if necessary, and cut out softened plaster board in damaged areas. Consult an expert such as an insurance assessor or builder.

•           Replace wall linings and floor coverings only after the building is completely dry.

•           Leave redecorating for at least three months after finishing the repairs, to prevent risk of mould, blistering, and peeling.

•           If you have insurance, contact your insurer to lodge a claim and understand how they can help. They may undertake some of these steps for you as part of your claim.

In the kitchen

•           Discard wooden items such as chopping boards and spoons, plastic utensils, and baby bottle teats and dummies, if they have come into contact with floodwater. There is no way to safely clean them.

•           Clean any other cooking, eating and kitchen utensils that have come into contact with floodwater:

    • Wash in hot soapy water.

    • Rinse thoroughly in safe water, then disinfect by immersing for 1 minute in a solution of 500 ml (about 2 cups) of plain, unperfumed, household bleach in 10 litres of water.

    • Rinse again in safe water.

    • Alternatively, boil all utensils for 1 minute and let cool.

In bedrooms and living rooms

•           You will need to throw away mattresses and other large items that have been soaked with floodwater. Foam rubber mattress or pillows may be able to be washed, disinfected and dried in the open air.

•           Get rid of contaminated clothing, carpets, upholstered furniture, toys and bedding, unless they can be cleaned and disinfected.

Cleaning up outside

•           First clear the access to the building – the rest of the section can come later. It’s easier to clean up outside once the outside has dried naturally, too.

•           Use a shovel to remove surface contamination. Place it at the edge of your section, ensuring it doesn’t block drainage channels.

•           The best way to make your outside areas safer is to rely on natural processes such as sunlight, drying and wind. Leave garden surfaces and lawns exposed to the air and sunshine to dry out naturally. Make drainage holes with a fork to aerate.

•           If the outside area is heavily contaminated with sewage, use garden lime to disinfect the area. Garden lime can be bought from a garden shop. Follow the instructions on the label.

•           Hard surfaces, such as driveways, can be cleaned and disinfected with 1 litre of household chlorine bleach in 10 litres of cold water (a household bucket). Leave the disinfectant on for 30 minutes, then rinse with clean water.

Food safety

•           Floodwater can carry bacteria that can contaminate food.

•           Throw away all food and drinking water that has come in contact with floodwater, including things stored in containers. It is impossible to know if containers have been damaged and the seals compromised.

•           Do not eat garden produce if the soil has been flooded. Clean up and remove debris and sprinkle gardens with lime.

•           Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are certain it is not contaminated. Follow any boil water notice instructions from your local authorities.

Edgecity Sustainability Focus

At Edgecity we strive to be leaders in the small business construction industry space. It is a passion of our’s to also be leaders in the reduction of construction waste and carbon from our sites. In support of this, one of our Site Leads, Clement recently attended the Sustainable Business Network “Building Out Waste and Carbon Masterclass” and is Edgecity’s Waste & Carbon Champion.

For a number of years now, Edgecity have removed waste from our sites using industry partners to ensure we are doing our bit.

How do we do this? Here are some examples:

Our used branded clothing is recycled into product used for packaging and insulation, paint is returned to the Resene for appropriate disposal using their PaintWise program, waste on site is sorted into recycle bins for plastics, paper, glass etc. Plasterboard offcuts are collected by Green Gorilla using the GIB/Green Gorilla initiative to recycle the waste into a variety of agricultural products. Steel is collected and taken to local scrap metal recyclers. Polystyrene is sorted separately and dropped into the polystyrene recycling centre at the Concourse.

Recently we hosted Clinton Jones from Green Gorilla at Edgecity’s premises. This was an opportunity to learn from Clinton on how we can collaborate to ensure that our focus remains strong and our leadership in this space continues to grow. Here’s what Clinton had to say after our meeting:

Hi Team,

Thanks for the time taken to meet with me today.

It was good to introduce Green Gorilla and all we stand for.

I was impressed with the strides you are taking towards more sustainable outcomes.

I was even more impressed with your obvious commitment to action evident in the set up of your offices.

Loved the Memorabilia and the passion.

Look forward to working more closely with you and your team.

Regards

Clinton Jones

That's a Wrap for 2022 - Merry Christmas!

With the Xmas crew activity completed earlier in the month, our last working day for the 2022 year was celebrated with the crew gathering at the Factory to share a meal, awards and some entertainment.

Zak received a “gift” from a Client who recognises the daunting task for an Apprentice in building up their toolset.

Clement was awarded the annual Edgecity Builders Events Champion trophy for 2022. A strong finish in the Axe Throwing event placing him ahead of the other crew.

Muzz took out the Crew Member of Q3 award

The day was rounded off with a game of darts, always good to leave the year on a high. Darts champion jury still deliberating on the winner!

The crew received a Xmas ham in their hampers…which then extended to the Great Xmas Ham Bake Off competition. Photos were sent through whilst we were on holiday. Again, the best ham jury is still deliberating on the winner. One of the submissions looks suspiciously like it may have been downloaded.

North Harbour Club

September to December was action packed with events for the North Harbour Club.

In September we attended the Business Excellent Network Breakfast at Regatta with guest speaker Mike Bush and again in November with Simon Bridges.

In October together with some of our Clients we attended the National Tribute to Sir Wayne Shelford at Westlake Boys High School. This was an evening celebrating the achievements of the inspirational Shelford, both on-and-off the rugby field.

We donned our formal dinner attire in November to join in congratulating the Gill & Gundry duo Walter Gill & Simon Gundry who were inducted into the North Harbour Club Business Hall of Fame. Over 50yrs in business together after having attended High School at Takapuna Grammar. Both Simon and Walter support many youth on the North Shore aspiring to reach the stars in their chosen sport and have worked with Edgecity on a variety of our construction projects.

Xmas at Edgecity Builders - Axe Throwing

Nothing like a bit of a competition amongst the Crew to close down a busy working year. AXE Throwing in central Auckland proved to be quite the entertainment. Divided into two Teams and then down to the Grand Finale with Axe Throwing Champion Clement taking out the inaugural title.

ECB Melbourne Cup Sweepstake

With prize money at stake, we all keenly selected a horse (some tried to select more than one) and then waited for the results…no 1st prize winner so we’ll all be sticking to building. The lack of success did not dampen our spirits and plenty of banter was shown amongst the crew which will lead well into next years race. Hearsay had it, the winner was in for a trip to Fiji.

RIP Queen Elizabeth

With sadness we acknowledged the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II after her 70yr reign. As Head of State, Her Majesty was also the head of the NZ Defence Force (NZDF) and its Services. Because of this, all members of the Defence Force are required to swear or affirm their allegiance to Her Majesty and to her heirs and successors. Nick remembers this oath with fondness and the reverence in which he gave it. Rest well your Majesty.
